Have you thought about your FITNESS New Year Resolutions yet? Now’s the perfect time and I’ll tell you why.
2015 is right around the corner… can you believe it? This year has gone by quicker than ever for me. If you make resolutions each year, now is a good time to start planning your year and preparing yourself to work hard for your goals. So many people drop off around February or March due to a lack of planning. Don’t be one of those people! Here are a few ways to start getting your fitness plan ready for the new year:
Make a list. This one seems obvious right? Start thinking of what you want to accomplish in 2015. Perhaps there are things you didn’t end up doing in 2014 – add that to your list. Write down everything you can think of. Once you’ve exhausted the list, go through and organize it. Are there things you want to do within the first month? Things that will take you 6 months? Seeing how long certain goals may take and having a visual timeline will help you track your progress throughout the year.
Make mini goals. Let’s say you want to be able to do 10 unassisted pull-ups. Well, how will you measure your progress? How will you work your way up to that? It will take time, which is why it’s important to set mini goals. Perhaps one mini goal will be to do one unassisted pull-up. Maybe before that your goal is to use the unassisted pull-up machine with the least amount of assistance. Many people give up because a goal seems too hard to accomplish or is taking too long. Having mini goals will keep you motivated. On your list, under each goal, list a couple mini goals as well. Start small and work from there. If you haven’t been active before then start out by taking a brisk walk for 5 minutes and add another 5 minutes each day until you’re walking 30 minutes at a time. Always check with your doctor first if this is new to you.
Get your apps ready. Start downloading apps that will help you in your journey. I’ve found them to be so helpful because I always have my phone with me anyways. You want to be set and ready to go once the new year rolls around so here are a few that can help:
- MyFitnessPal – This app will help you log your nutrition. You can input items or scan bar codes and the app will track calories, macronutrients and more. Logging your nutrition is a good first step in leading a healthier life.
- RunKeeper – Do you plan on running? RunKeeper is an app that tracks your miles as you run. You can set it up to give you mile splits, running cues and much more (all while you run). Other apps that do similar things are MapMyRun, Strava and the Nike+ app.
- CouchTo5K – Want to run a 5K in 2015? This app and training plan will help you get there. It combines walking and running intervals to help you complete a 5K race.
- Nike Training Club – This app gives you workouts you can do at the gym or at home. It gives you workouts based on your goals, and instructions for performing exercises. Perfect if you want to start strength training this year.
Start now. Why are you waiting until January 1? Start now and get a head start! By doing so, you will be ahead of the game. We all know the holiday season means parties and indulging, which is why getting active now is a great idea. Pick one of your mini-goals and start working on it now. If your goal is to run a 5K in 2015, start going for daily walks to build up your cardio base. There is no reason to way until the new year to make a change. Start Simply but Simply Start!
Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone, use the time between now and January to really focus on what you want to accomplish. Many people fail to complete their resolutions because they don’t plan and map out their goals. As the saying goes, “Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.” Let’s make this year different! I know I am. What fitness goals would you like to accomplish next year?
