It finally got chilly here in my desert and that means it’s Hot Chocolate Season! The only thing better than drinking hot chocolate is playing with Hot Chocolate Play Dough. Here’s how you can make your own too.
My now famous recipe for Apple Pie Play Dough was such a hit I decided to think of another favorite food flavor for the Winter. It seems like when things get cold you spend more time playing inside and play dough is the perfect indoor activity. Do your children love a warm cup of hot chocolate? If so, they will also love this recipe for hot chocolate play dough. Using a few ingredients you most likely have in your kitchen already, this hot chocolate play dough is the perfect winter craft to enjoy with your kids. Here is how you can get started creating your own.
2 cups of all purpose flour
2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
2 tablespoons of cream of tartar
3/4 cup salt
1/2 cup of instant hot chocolate mix or cocoa powder
2 cups of hot water
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine all of the ingredients and mix well. Continue kneading until a soft dough forms.
2. If the dough is too sticky, meaning it is sticking to your fingers, add a teaspoon of flour at a time until the stickiness is gone.
3. If the dough is too dry and crumbling, add one teaspoon of water at a time until the problem is resolved.
4. Continue to knead the dough until you can form a ball. Cover your workspace with a little dusting of flour to make the dough easy to work and to keep it from sticking to the space.
To really make this hot chocolate play dough perfect, you can also add a few teaspoons of marshmallow fluff to the mixture. Or, you can sprinkle it with miniature marshmallows and knead them in. Either way, you will notice how sweet this play dough smells!
Your hot chocolate play dough will last longer if you store it in an air tight container when not in use. If it does start to dry, add a few drops of vegetable oil to help rehydrate it.
Give this hot chocolate play dough a try with your family! You will find it is the perfect winter craft. The big question though is “Can you play with this Hot Chocolate Play Dough without having a cup of hot cocoa to drink?”
