Here are some of the reasons Why You Should Use Coconut Oil.
It’s a new year and I’m looking for ways to continue living healthy and one of those ways is by what I eat. There are many types of oils I can use and I’ve recently been trying the newest one in my pantry so I thought I’d share what I’ve learned about it with you. Coconut oil has been deemed a “super food” in recent times – and rightfully so. Coconut oil has many health benefits, relating to weight loss, skin health and more. Here are a few reasons why you need to start consuming coconut oil:
Healthy fats. Although coconut oil contains 90% saturated fat, it’s nothing to be afraid of. The fat is a “medium-chain triglyceride” which actually has various health benefits. This type of fat can actually increase “good” cholesterol levels in your body. It is also is more easily digested and converted to energy, according to The Wall Street Journal. However, keep in mind that it is still fat. Moderation is key.
Kill infections. Those same medium-chain triglycerides mentioned above also help kill infections and bacteria, such as yeast and fungi. Adding coconut oil to your regimen can help with your digestive health, especially if you suspect you may have a candida overgrowth.
Weight loss. Coconut oil has been shown to regulate appetite, which will help keep you fuller longer. Start cooking with coconut oil, or add some to your morning coffee or smoothie, and you may find it helps with your weight loss goals.
Skin & hair health. Have dry skin? Use coconut oil. Since it is high in Vitamin E, it is great for skin health and to use as a moisturizer. The same goes for your hair. Using coconut oil as a hair mask can help repair damaged strands, make your hair shiny again, and eliminate dandruff. Since coconut oil kills bacteria, using it on skin can help with dermatitis. Plus, it smells great!
Cooking. Some oils, like olive oil, release free radicals when cooked in high temperatures. Free radicals can cause disease by mutating health cells’ DNA. Coconut oil can be cooked in higher temperatures, due to those medium-chain triglycerides. A little goes a long way – only use about half a tablespoon to start and add more as you need it.
Brain health. Just as the healthy fat in coconut oil is great for heart health, it is also great for brain health. Coconut oil, as well as other healthy fats, can keep your brain in tip-top shape, and also prevent diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Great for pets. Pets can benefit from coconut oil too! It helps them for many of the same reasons stated above. For example, if your dog has a skin condition like dermatitis, coconut oil will help. It will also make your pets have a shiny, healthy coat. Does your pet have digestion issues? Then coconut oil will help that as well, just as it does in humans. Make sure to talk to your vet first about the proper amount to give to your dog or cat.
Coconut oil really has a myriad of health benefits. People used to be wary of consuming it due to its high fat content, but that myth has finally been dispelled. Whether you have itchy skin or simply want to improve your overall health, start adding in coconut oil to your daily routine! Have you tried it? What is your favorite way to use it?
