Do you love honey like I do? Sharing my thoughts today on some of the Health Benefits of Honey.
Honey can be a delicious add-in to foods and meals like oatmeal, yogurt and smoothies. Honey has been around for centuries, and has been used as a natural remedy for many things. It has a myriad of health benefits ranging from being an antibacterial to a great face mask! Here’s a list of five ways you can use honey:
It’s an antioxidant. An antioxidant is a substance or chemical than can prevent or slow down cell damage, and protects our bodies from free radicals. Fruits and veggies (and red wine) are usually touted as being full of antioxidants. Well, honey is too! If you need a sweetener, using honey instead of sugar is healthier and studies show it increases antioxidant levels in your blood. Many people find relief from allergies by eating local honey.
It can treat wounds. According to the National Institutes of Health, honey can be used as a topical treatment for wounds! WebMD states, “Honey was used by the ancient Greek physician Dioscorides in 50 A.D. for sunburn and infected wounds.” Honey has a bacteria fighting characteristic to it, which makes it hard for bacteria to grow, which is why it can be used on wounds.
It can help with a sore throat. Before you reach for that cough syrup, try heating up a bit of honey with lemon, or adding honey to hot tea. It’s a natural way to soothe a sore throat or calm down a cough. Because of its antibacterial properties, it may also help fight off any bacteria in your throat.
It’s a natural energy booster. Are you an avid gym goer? Honey can provide a natural energy boost as opposed to many pre-workout supplements currently on the market. Because of its combination of carbohydrates and sugar, it works well as an afternoon pick-me-up. If you’re an endurance athlete, you can use honey during your workouts or make your own honey electrolyte beverage as opposed to buying expensive gels.
It can help with skin issues. As mentioned above, honey fights against bacteria, which makes it a good treatment for acne or other skin issues. Also, if you make a face mask, it will leave your skin feeling smooth and radiant. The same can be said for your hair! Try using honey to make a hair mask, especially if you have dry, frizzy hair after this winter.
Whether you’re looking for an all-natural energy boost during your workout, or you are suffering a sore throat, honey is the answer. Keep your cupboards stocked and make sure to check the ingredient labels before buying! Try to stick to organic or even raw honey when possible in order to reap the full benefits. My favorite place to buy honey is at my local farmers market. A fun known fact is that honey never expires! Do you like honey or eat it? What is your favorite way to eat it?
