Sharing 10 Healthier Sweet Treats For When Your Sweet Tooth Strikes
You know how much I love Eating Healthy! A couple of times a year I check up on my own eating habits to make sure I’m doing what feels best for my body. January is one of those times! I might have enjoyed a few too many treats over the holidays. Did you? Do you have a sweet tooth? We all know sugar isn’t the best for your health, especially refined sugar, such as cookies and pastries, etc. I have found the perfect things to treat myself too if I feel the need to have something sweet in my life. I thought I’d share my Healthier Sweet Treats ideas with you in case you were trying to cut sugar out of your diet too.
1. Dark Chocolate Hot Chocolate
Dark chocolate is a great source of antioxidants and may help in lowering “bad cholesterol.” If you want something sweet to sip on, simply heat up your milk, and melt a square or two of dark chocolate in it. It’s a much healthier choice than regular hot chocolate! Make sure to buy dark chocolate with over 70% cocoa content.
2. Chocolate Dipped Fruit
While you’re melting that dark chocolate, melt some more to make chocolate dipped fruit! Pick your favorite fruit to dip into it. Berries have the least sugar content.
3. Peppermint Tea
Did you know peppermint tea can actually quell your sugar cravings? If you don’t have peppermint tea on hand, chew a piece of gum or pop a mint. Studies show minty flavors can help keep those cravings at bay.
4. Banana with Nutella
While Nutella isn’t the healthiest food out there, dabbing a little bit on your banana might be the thing to “hit the spot.” Make sure to stick to the serving size or a little less.
5. Protein Pancakes
You can have breakfast any time of the day! Create a healthier version of pancakes by making protein pancakes with your protein powder. Add fruits as toppings and perhaps a few dark chocolate chips into the mix.
6. Banana “Nice Cream”
This super easy ice cream will be your new favorite. Simply mash up a banana or two, place in the freezer for about 10 minutes, and enjoy. Add in your toppings of choice like crushed nuts or a drizzle of honey. Much healthier than Ben & Jerry’s!
7. Frozen Greek Yogurt Covered Fruit
Greek yogurt and fruit is a great combination right? This takes it a step further by freezing these two together. Place the greek yogurt into a bowl, along with your choice of fruit (like blueberries or grapes). Toss until the fruit is fully covered, then place in the freezer until they’re frozen.
8. Apple with Peanut Butter
Not only is this a great sweet treat, it’s also the perfect pre-workout snack. Use your nut butter of choice and enjoy!
9. Chia Pudding
Do you love pudding? Make chia pudding as a healthier alternative. This chocolate chia seed pudding recipe only uses six ingredients!
10. Skinny Cow Ice Cream
If that banana nice cream isn’t hitting the spot, opt for Skinny Cow ice cream, which is available in grocery stores. Skinny Cow bars are low in calories and fat. For example, this Skinny Cow ice cream sandwich only has 150 calories and 2 grams of fat.
Watching your sugar intake is very beneficial for your health. According to the American Heart Association, you should only be eating about 25 grams of sugar per day. The next time you get a sugar craving, go for one of these alternatives instead! What is your favorite way to curb your sweet tooth?
